Loma - Loma (2018)

Ideated from: some inbox albums whose only common thread is being self-titled

Emily Cross records as Cross Record, a pretty great body of work in itself. She and her collaborator Dan Duszynski apparently decided that their music wasn’t quite moody, soaring, atmospheric, and emotional enough, and added another element: Jonathan Meiburg, leader of Shearwater (O_o, O_o).

It’s a brilliant mixture. This record is so slick and seamless, moving between shimmering pop and dark, smouldering grooves. Cross’s vocals match the songs perfectly.

This was one of my favorites of the year when it came out, and I’m always happy to listen again.

Tracks I Liked

Dark Oscillations - builds to a good crescendo

Joy - gorgeous, but not all that joyous

Jonada - a loping, expansive instrumental with a ton of wide open space.
