Release - Cop Shoot Cop (1994)

ideated from: last week was a lot of discovery, and it was hit-and-miss, if I’m being honest. So this week I’m queuing up known quantities: things I already love and just want to hear again

I’ve mentioned before I used to be involved with college radio stations at schools I attended and just lived nearby. One afternoon i had KAOR on as I often did, and heard a song that kicked my ass so hard that I had to call in to the station to find out what it was.

It was Any Day Now, from this album, and I was hooked.

For as abrasive as Cop Shoot Cop are on this record, this is actually the “big label sellout” album, and the last one they’d make. They added a guitarist, which makes this sound like a more standard industrial metal record. Previous to that CSC had only employed what they called “high bass” and “low bass” in a massively claustrophobic rumble.

This keeps a lot of that angry, cooped-up energy, but let’s it shine through with a bit of the electric guitar agressiveness that was the stock in trade of underground rock at the time.

Singer Tod A would go on to make a bunch of interesting music with Firewater. I don’t know what happened to anyone else involved here, but this record is absolutely great.

Tracks I Liked

Two At A Time - “All good things come to an end / but the bad ones seem to take their time”

Any Day Now - “one of these days i’m gonna sell my soul, let em find out what they bought” Good luck counting the time signature.
