Compassion - Vijay Iyer, Linda May Han Oh, and Tyshawn Sorey (2024)
Iyer is a frequent obsession who hasn’t landed in this space yet. This is a trio date featuring two other top-notch musicians who each lead their own groups. Frequent Iyer collaborator Linda May Han Oh (o_O) is a great bassist and figures on many of my favorite jazz records. Sorey has dozens of recording credits to his name.
The two provide a solid foundation for Iyer to show off his smooth but complex piano stylings. He likes to hit the keys hard to percussive effect at times, but can also create a lovely flow.
Tracks I Liked
Compassion - the title track is a great opening statement
Overjoyed - both furious and calm to an amazing degree. Everyone gets their moment to shine here.
Tempest - is it trite to say it’s “stormy”?
