Lungs - Florence + The Machine (2010)

So I had just started a new job in early 2011. Shortly after I started, I took on a very large new project that it was understood was going to be much more than a 40-hours-a-week deal. I Spent the next 6 weeks working about 60 hour+ weeks. The project didn’t go anywhere; the client ran out of money and had to shut it down. But two things happened that were very important lessons.

1) I spent six weeks without really looking at Twitter, despite having been chronically online for years before that. When I got back, I realized that I had missed absolutely nothing of substance. That’s really when I slowed down and eventually stopped worrying about social media.

2) I listened to this record. A lot. Over and over again, in a way I hadn’t obsessed about a record for years. It just seemed to pair so well with my work. The ebb and flow of energy and anger and beauty always kept me at peak concentration.

If I’m honest, F+M’s later albums are better: more cohesive, better executed, with a wider vision. But this is an amazing record that will always be a favorite of mine.

Also, not on this playlist: don’t sleep on the b-side cover of Robert Palmer’s Addicted To Love from these sessions.
