This Place Will Become Your Tomb - Sleep Token (2021)
I listen to a lot of music, and to a lot of modern heavy music. But even with all that, I increasingly feel like when it comes to heavy music, there’s Sleep Token and then there’s everybody else.
Sleep Token (o_O) are anonymous. They play masked and do interviews with vocoders. They seem to be quite serious about not letting personality get in the way of the music.
The drummer, who refers to himself as II, is absolutely amazing. He mixes all kinds of genres and techniques.
The tracks are often blistering, but they also leave room for lots of soulful singing and quiet searching. I don’t know if it would be fair to tag this alt-r&b, but the vocals often bend into the same territory as Sault and simliar London R&B.
