Everybody Scream - Florence + The Machine (2025)
If there’s a recurring theme for Florence Welch’s work, it’s the connection between the sacred feminine and the creative act. The last album featured extended comparisons of dance and movement and its spiritual significance to more personal manifestations of expression and actualization.
There are similar themes here, with as many references to magic (real magic, not show magic) but it stays dialed down to Welch’s own ambitions and goals.
Having survived an emergency surgery from pregnancy complications, Welch is mulling over the personal cost of the fame she’s achieved. It’s a game she plays willingly, but in places (like on One Of The Best) she realizes the game is rigged against her.
With songwriting and production assistance from both Mark Bowen of Idles and Aaron Dessner of The National, Welch and the band build a typically dense and thoughtful collection with enough depth to keep you reading the lyrics after listening to them twenty times.
