LOGGERHEAD - Wu-lu (2022)

Who really even knows what “progressive” means anymore. My favorite things that have the word “prog” attached to them involve doing things in ways others aren’t trying. If that’s the way to look at it, then this is a prog rap record.

The debut album from the awesomely named Miles Romans-Hopcraft, it mixes UK hip hop and drill with lots of American-style trap, plus some prog rock song structures and hardcore and post-hardcore sensibilities. It ends up as a heady mix of beats and grooves and riffs, and it makes its own path.

I’ve been listening to this thing a lot the last few weeks, and I don’t see that stopping.

Tracks I liked

Night Pill - A straight hip hop track with punk energy. Exactly what I’m talking about.

South - heavy on the harmonically dense basslines and vocals that make Fugazi so distinctive, with all the claustrophobia and manic energy of Tricky.
