Brutalism - Idles (2017)
ideated from: catching Idles’ set from Lolapalooza on Hulu. They shoved.
Idles do punk and hardcore in the old ways: unrelentingly. You don’t get a power ballad or an acoustic reverie to break it up. You get pounded with anger and socialist rhetoric. It’s all very well said and humorous, and the wit makes it way more awesome than if it were just preachy.
There’s a lot of high-minded ideas at play here, even if the music sounds primitive.
Tracks I Liked
Faith In The City - it’s a great tune, though honestly I think the socialist left doesn’t do itself any favors by making fun of the role of faith in many people’s lives. Just my little editorial.
Stendahl Syndrome - an interesting piss-take on the meaning of art.
White Privilege - One of the best lines I’ve ever heard in a political song: “how many optimists does it take to change a lightbulb / None! Their butler changes the lightbulb”
