Superunknown - Soundgarden (1994)
ideated from: 1994 is still the greatest year in music history
I usually queue up what I’m going to listen to sometime in the middle of the week. I was so excited to listen to this one that I jumped the queue this morning. (yes, I know I could just listen to it whenever, but then it wouldn’t be a listen of the day, would it?)
This is a monster of a record. Everyone in Soundgarden were such good musicians, and they were extremely inventive. You can hear the squall and squelch of the stoner rock sound of the late 80s and the newly crowned king of all genre, grunge. But unlike some of their peers, Soundgarden had a masterful rhythm section to go along with their awesome guitarist and otherworldly singer.
Tracks I Liked
My Wave - switches off between 4s and 3s for rhythms to make a churning, constantly compelling tune
Black Hole Sun - One of the all time greats. Gaudy, gorgeous, immaculately frightful
4th Of July - An Alice In Chains track hiding out in the backrooms of a Soundgarden album
