Mighty Joe Moon - Grant Lee Buffalo (1994)

ideated from: 1994 is still the greatest year in music history

I often run with a line like “these guys never got as much attention as they deserved,” but Grant Lee Phillips is definitely one of those awesome songwriters with a very affecting voice who has still mostly evaded stardom.

Grant Lee Buffalo recorded four quite great albums in the 90s–loud, country- and psych-streaked alt rock that occasionally let through bursts of acoustic beauty. This one is the first I heard of them and is still my favorite. Phillips has spent the last couple decades recording under his own name, with slightly more sedate country-influenced rock.

Tracks I Liked

Mockingbirds - a gorgeous number

It’s the Life - Don’t know if I’ve made this clear, but I want this song played at my funeral. One of the most beautiful songs I know

Demon Called Deception - a nasty self-examination

Superunknown
Soundgarden
gungy minor classic
