Calming Signals - Rich Ruth (2019)
There are a bunch of different ways you could hear this. There’s the tradition of spiritual and “fourth-world” jazz, that looks to get you into an entirely different headspace with the music. That’s also a similar aim of psychedelic music, although this doesn’t sound as much like a lot of psych artists you might think of.
It’s also an exercise in demonstrating that styles and genres don’t matter much in the world of modern music. Ruth and his companions do whatever comes to them in the best possible way.
Tracks I Liked
Coming Down - Starts out sounding like 70s-era kosmische trance music
Carrying It Around - one of the more expressly spiritual jazz type tracks
Haynes Manor - programmed synths underlie some great horn lines
