The Great Awakening - Shearwater (2022)
Ideated from: ending the year with some of my favorites of 2022 that I hadn’t written up yet.
I listened to a lot of music this year; But I couldn’t think of a better 2022 record to play us out.
I’ve talked about Shearwater multiple times already. But this is a great record from them, as usual, so I’ll talk them up again.
Adding Loma bandmate Dan Duszynski along with previous collaborators, leader Jonathan Meiburg has created another solid slab of emotionally dense and moody rock. His tenor voice soars above gorgeous, flowing rhythms.
Tracks I Liked
No Reason - A Meiburg classic, rumbling and soaring and exploding and putting itself back together
Xenarthran - segues from mellow to brooding and back again.
Everyone You Touch - a jazzy turn in the guitar line, along with some strings and a loping cymbal beat
Aqaba - Meiburg’s voice is amazing and it’s showcased very well here
