New Heaven - Inter Arma (2024)
If you’ve read this space much, it won’t surprise you that my favorite metal bands are the ones that are hard to shoehorn into a genre tag.
I guess i hadn’t written up their Sulphur English, a favorite of mine from a few years ago. But I’ve been a big fan of their clashing, crashing koleidoscope of edgy and extreme sounds.
The first half is front-loaded with impossibly aggressive blackened sounds that still land with the impact of the punchiest death metal.
It branches from there into things that might be better listed as prog or melodic or folk metal, and then into something that sounds a bit like half-speed Joy Division. It’s all brilliant.
