What Color Is Love? - Terry Callier (1972)
I didn’t know anything about Callier before I came across this. He was at home in the more psychedelic end of folk music, but he’s a jazz singer through and through.
The songs are wonderfully written and sung with an unpretentious air. We hear bits of classic songbook jazz along with some really bold guitar and vocal figures.
There’s a wildly diverse sonic palette that varies from song to song but is always great for the task at hand.
Tracks I Liked
Dancing Girl - an epic journey through a great story and out the other side into space
You Goin’ Miss Your Candyman - a funky adaptation of an old tune. Oh look more of my AI-assisted musicology
Just As Long As We’re In Love - a “Quiet Storm”-style soul tune that isn’t actually very quiet.
