The Room - Fabiano do Nascimento & Sam Gendel (2024)

End of Year: some stuff I loved in 2024

This was my most listened to album of 2024 according to Spotify, partly because it came out in the first months of the year, but it held my attention more than anything else this year and I returned to it every time I needed a little blast of clever beauty.

Saxophonist (and graphic designer) Sam Gendel switches to the Soprano Sax here, which I first mistook for a clarinet. It’s such an expressive instrument, and lends itself well to this quieter duo setting.

I hadn’t heard of Nascimento by himself, although I will definitely be finding more of his work. He has a great approach to multiple melodic lines and subtle, fun rhythms.

The interplay between the two musicians is stunning.
