SICK! - Earl Sweatshirt (2022)
I think it’s fair to say that Earl makes short records. the couple of previous ones– I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside and the followup, Some Rap Songs–were great, but frustrating in their own ways. They were sometimes repetitive, sometimes too murky, sometimes just plain lo-fi. This one is a much more coherent group of ideas. It’s much clearer, both in how it was recorded and maybe what it’s trying to accomplish.
That said it still feels a bit incomplete. At only 24 minutes long, with the second half of the tracklist mostly lasting less than 2 minutes each, it feels like a collection of demos. Extremely good demos, but it still feels like we’re just getting a passing glimpse of something bigger.
Tracks I like:
2010 - an instant classic
Tabula Rasa - Armand Hammer kind of steals this one.
