Douce Fange - Pensées Nocturnes (2022)

Ideated from: Invisible Oranges

I just… wow. I started into this just on a whim this afternoon, and I can’t stop listening. As with many great metal albums, I found this on the excellent Invisible Oranges. I owe them a coffee.

Is there such a thing as Circus Jazz Metal? If that’s a thing, this is it. There are horns and double bass galore, along with what sounds like more traditional French folk elements (I guess? What do I know?). And also metal. Very large amounts of metal.

This is hard to describe but it’s a wild ride.

Tracks I liked:

Quel Sale Bourreau - I’ll take “metal songs that quote Charles Mingus” for 500, Alex…

Charmant Charnier - I don’t speak a lot of French but I appreciate the French-only pun on the phrase “charming grave”

Le Tango du Vieuloniste - blends the folk element with the head-crushing very well. It really does manage to be a tango, in between blast beats.
