Remember That I Love You - Kimya Dawson (2006)

A recommendation from my wonderful daughter and esteemed factotum, Serie

I’ve talked before about the no-frills beauty of punk music. This isn’t punk in a musical sense, but I once heard music like this called “attack dog folk,” taking a punk approach with an acoustic guitar. Hyper-verbal, hyper-confessional, all of her thoughts and worries and honesty and insecurity aimed straight at your head like a firehose.

There’s some really dark material here, but the delivery is so bouncy and earnest it’s hard to get too gloomy about it. Just on a personal level, I feel like it gets into a rut in places, like she thinks if she keeps talking manically enough she won’t have to confront the problems she’s facing. But we each have our own way of navigating the world, so I don’t mean to criticize. It’s interesting to see her approach laid out so clearly. And once in a while the songs resolve into real wisdom and reflection about living with yourself and getting through that makes it transcend.

Tracks I Liked:

Loose Lips - did I mention there’s a lot of manic punk energy?

I Like Giants - “My soul is just a whisper trapped inside a tornado” good stuff.

The Competition - my favorite here, I think
