Below The Bassline - Ernest Ranglin (1996)
Ideated from: the digital crate digging of pre-Napster MP3 sharing.
I don’t know much about Ranglin, and I haven’t found a lot else that has his name on it. But man, do I love this record.
Smooth, understated, slightly corny, raggae-inflected jazz, with a kind of George Benson guitar style. Lots of the titular bass, too. It almost sounds like dub in places, but I don’t think it’s treated at all.
I could leave this guy on all day, and I have before.
Tracks I Liked:
Surfin’ - a little more jazz than raggae
54-46 (Was My Number) - Toots & The Maytals, I think, originally. great tune.
