Into Forever - Matthew Halsall & The Gondwana Orchestra, Josephine Oniyama (2015)

ideated from: a favorite album that starts with “I”

Halsall is from Manchester, UK, and runs the Gondwana label that features his own work and a lot of English nu-jazz from the area.

This record is more of an outing for Halsall the composer rather than Hallsall the trumpeter.

The whole thing is so cohesive that you barely notice that Oniyama only lends her soaring vocals on 4 tracks, and Halsall only actually plays trumpet (at least that you’d notice) on 2. The rest of it is down to the groovy-AF beats laid down by the band. A standard jazz piano trio gets fleshed out with percussion, flute, harp, and strings in various places.

Not a famous record, but a really great one.

Tracks I Liked

all of Oniyama’s vocals are standouts, but I liked Badder Weather best.
