Laughing Stock - Talk Talk (1991)

This is another one I discovered in my mp3-sharing days, and it’s stuck with me. Talk Talk were a pretty conventional 80s pop / new wave band that basically just decided they were going to do something more. They stopped touring, started taking multiple years to create intricate studio constructions, and released two mind-scrambling collections of post-free-absolutely-everything music in 1988’s Spirit Of Eden and this one.
No one would bat an eye at this kind of thing these days. You can find a hundred bands on Bandcamp that do something similar with jazzy grooves and rock guitar and atmospheric arrangements. But there was nothing quite like this in the 90s. The band seemingly follow their muse wherever it might lead them.
