Misadventures Of Doomscroller - Dawes (2022)

Ideated from: some new releases I’ve been playing heavily

I hadn’t encountered Dawes before. Their previous records don’t seem radically different on a cursory spin through them. They’re something between a jam band and 70s yacht-rock revivalists. Bright guitars, piano, angular melodies, chugging rhythms, stretched out songs.

But this record is really very good, maybe just them finding their wheelhouse. Again, I don’t have a lot to compare it to, but it seems like the they’ve done what they do, only the best they’ve ever done it by several lengths. There are great lyrics here, and really catchy melodies and hooks.

Tracks I Liked

Someone Else’s Cafe - this is run together with the second track, which I don’t like as much, but it’s a really thought-provoking lyric

Comes in Waves - a beautiful ballad

Ghost In The Machine - I love songs that take spirituality seriously as a thing to wrestle with, as you might know if you read much here.
