Red Rose Speedway - Paul McCartney and Wings (1973)

After all the drama and pressure of being in the most important band in the world for the previous decade, you can’t help but get the impression that Paul in the 70s just wanted to do his thing and play some music. He was continuing to grow as a songwriter, as a recording artist, and as a musician. He had practically unlimited resources.

If you were going to criticize, it’s maybe that he didn’t have a lot of people to tell him “no.” He recorded and released mostly whatever he wanted even if it was maybe not the best thing he could have done. But part of what makes Paul great is that he’s not really a perfectionist. He’ll release records full of home recordings or demos, or songs that he thought were good even if nobody else agreed. And hey, even bad Paul songs are better than 90% of songs.
