Tapestry - Carole King (1971)
Ideated from: Starting my second year of this blog with some famous second albums
I often like to refer to “grocery store music,” music that’s so fundamentally part of our musical culture that no one even notices when it’s on in the background. If there was one level even deeper and more foundational, there would probably be several tracks here in that tier.
You can know about the 1970s singer-songwriter movement, the laid-back Laurel Canyon sound of the era, and all kinds of other things that helped form this . Or you can not know any of that, and still love this record.
Tracks I Liked
I Feel The Earth Move - a soft-rock banger
It’s Too Late - Gorgeous and sad
Will You Love Me Tomorrow? - A heartfelt ballad that’s still fantastic
Smackwater Jack - Sounds like someone said “Yeah, but can she do a Jim Croce-style rocker?” and Carole said, “hold my cabernet sauvignon”
