Outlandos d'Amour - The Police (1978)

Ideated from: In a way, the 80s started in 1978. A lot of huge 80s artists and their signature sounds were just debuting or just getting up to speed in 1978.

The Police seemed to spring fully formed into the world with their 1978 debut. They’d shave off the punk edges over the next couple of albums, and tone down the ska and raggae influences as they found their own sound. But the harrowing emotional wringers Sting put his characters through are already on full display here, along with his lyrical wit and the smart interplay between three outstanding musicians.

Tracks I Liked

Roxanne - how do you not like this song? Well, maybe when you’re in the room with somebody who thinks they can sing it…

Hole In My Life - a howling and skeletal ska-punk take on a Beatles-y pop tune that smacks.

Can’t Stand Losing You - grimy and desperate, but extremely compelling.
