Permutation - Amon Tobin (1998)

ideated from: a favorite album that starts with ‘P’.

Amon Tobin is a wildly original producer who’s been doing awesome head bobbing electronic tracks for decades. This is an early record, and the first one I listened to. It’s still one of my favorites.

He takes a wide array of drum samples and uses them to build complex rhythms. Then he adds in enough melody and texture to make his own little world on each track.

Tracks I Liked

Bridge - the hardest track you’ve ever heard from a nu jazz band that doesn’t really exist.

Sordid - a funky synth workout

People Like Frank - spooky good

Toys - humorous and playful, but with an edge. Makes me think of Shostokovic string quartets for whatever reason.
