More Songs About Food And Revolutionary Art - Carl Craig (1997)
Ideated from: a Black History Month reminder that black artists largely built the modern world of music
The Detroit techno scene of the 80s and 90s was highly influential in shaping the sound of the dancefloor both in the US and Europe. Carl Craig was an early standout who kept on making new sounds and classic dancefloor tracks.
This one (probably named after the similar Talking Heads title from the 70s) is one of the more downbeat entries in his catalog, with slower beats and more chill. Even “chill” for Craig was pretty frenetic, though. There are still a lot of burbling synths and house drum programming, but it adds up to something with a smoother texture than the bugged out high-energy dance tracks he also made.
Tracks I Liked
Red Lights - a slowed down, slightly ominous “chopped and screwed” kind of beat
Dreamland - smooth and chill, very elegant
Frustration - a great claustrophobic synth sound
