Homework - Daft Punk (1997)
Ideated from: The Sevens, releases from years ending in 7. idk it’s as good as anything else…
I mentioned MTV’s Amp showcase a few days ago. I think that was also the first time I’d heard of Daft Punk.
The trancier, more repetitive bits of house music have never really appealed to me (I remember a guy on my dorm floor in 1993 who was really into club / house / dj stuff and used to play a track that was literally just an unaccompanied voice saying “work it work it work it work it” over and over again for minutes). There’s plenty of that here, since Daft Punk really came up as a house act. But there’s also a lot more humor and quirk and interesting texture compared to the stuff that was designed purely for keeping people on the dancefloor.
The chunky synths and samples on top of the ever-present 909 drum machine tracks make something with a little more personality than a lot of more generic dance music that had been around.
There also aren’t a whole lot of faceless Euro DJs who have songs written about them.
