Lei Line Eon - Iglooghost (2021)
Ideated from: A playlist I uncovered from couple years ago entitled “Weird Shit from albumoftheyear.org scraping”. I do love to go deep-diving into genres and lists of stuff I’ve never heard of on there.
Lei Music (╰ ⋵ ⋰☗∰፨☼⑇ ) is a type of music based around specific combinations of sounds & airbound emissions that are intended to summon an entity. Tearing strange beings into the human world from invisible zones, instrument-players gather to perform screeching, clattering compositional experiments.
That from a website about Lei Music, which seems to mostly be promo for Seamus Malliagh, who does business as Iglooghost. Yeah, I don’t know either. As far as I can tell everything about Lei Music is his own invention, so I don’t know if he’s taking the piss or is an actual trailblazing genius or somewhere in between.
Whatever it is, this is an entirely engrossing record.
It seems to exist in its own space, with its own internal logic. Mournful strings and tinkling pianos are as likely to show up as massive bass drops or hushed trap vocals. The whole thing is hypnotic and sultry, forcing its way to the foreground.
Tracks I Liked
Pure Grey Circle - a great violin lead and a fantastic whispered vocal. Really good on headphones to capture the beauty and claustrophobia of it all.
Amu (Disk-Mod) - a super creepy and electronically chopped kids choir that still sounds gorgeous.
Yellow Umbra - a blissed-out come-down of a closer, recapping a lot of the sounds and strategies we’ve heard.
