Young Team - Mogwai (1997)
Ideated from: I keep a playlist of things that have been reissued, remastered, or given some kind of historical or archival release. I’ll tick some of those off this week.
Something that often bugs me about stuff that gets labeled as post rock is that it’s really more jam-band-y. When you spend 8 minutes grinding on two chords, you’d better have a good reason for it. And a lot of bands don’t: there’s no compositional blueprint, no attempt to get a drone effect to subtly set in. It’s just two chords. For 8 minutes.
Contrast with Mogwai, who could grind on two chords for 8 minutes and transport you to another solar system.
Their music has become more complex and subtle over the years, but I will always take the clobber-you-over-the-head 90s version of Mogwai.
