Bodily Functions - Matthew Herbert (2001)

Apparently a classic, but not one I knew anything about until I put it on my list. Herbert apparently has a contract with himself to only use samples he records himself, and not to use presets of any kind on his gear. As you might gather from the title, the samples here mostly come from recording the human body, although it’s mostly processed into unrecognizability.

All that aside, this is a low-key, deep-pocket-funky good time. The off-kilter vocals on most tracks complement the odd rhythms and dense underlayer of details.

Tracks I Liked

Foreign Bodies - skitters and jumps playfully

I Know - one of the more conventional tracks, with some smooth jazz samples and a great piano line.

About This Time Each Day - an unexpectedly chill number that seems like you might get a bass drop at any second, but you never do

Haxan Cloak
metal-AF ambient doom
