The First Day - David Sylvian & Robert Fripp (1993)

Sylvian has been around a long time, first in the proggy / art-rocky new wave band Japan, then as a solo artist. Apparently Fripp asked Sylvian to join the then-forming 90s version of King Crimson. That would have been a trip.

The duo toured and wrote material, then recorded it with future Crim Trey Gunn and Crim-adjacent drummer Jerry Marotta.

It’s much groovier and funkier than most things Fripp puts his muscle behind, and it’s delightful to hear him work in that context.

You still get some raging solo work under all the arpeggio. Sylvian is a total weirdo lyrically but has a great voice and always seems to know what he’s doing.
