From Mars To Sirius - Gojira (2005)
I suspect even established extreme bands in the early aughts were suffering from a bit of Mastodon envy. The boys from Atlanta had just stormed onto the scene with tuneful, literate, cerebral stuff that also shoved hard and it had a huge influence for peers, followers, and even the band’s own influences.
No big surprise, then, that France’s Gojira created this sci-fi themed alt-metal classic, with all the riff-sludge and gaudy harmony of early Mastodon at their best.
Tracks I liked
Every track is solid as hell. Bonus points awarded for a song about “Flying Wales,” the dreamstuff of every nerdy kid who ever owned psychedelic surrealist art as a poster, notebook, or folder.
