Mose Allison Sings - Mose Allison (1963)

Allison was a distinctive blues and jazz stylist, with his crooning voice and galloping piano arrangements.

This is a record that’s heavy on other people’s songs, even though he wrote quite a few himself over the years.

It’s not the kind of thing that’s mind-blowing, but he does his somewhat limited thing to near perfection. It makes for an extremely pleasant and distracting listen.

Tracks I Like

Eyesight To The Blind - Sonny Boy Williamson tune

Parchman Farm - an Allison original, sitting firmly in the somewhat troubling “shot my woman” subgenre of the blues tradition

Young Man’s Blues - another Allison composition, adapted as a long-standing live staple for The Who
