Song Of Innocence - David Axelrod (1968)
Axelrod was a well-respected arranger and producer when he decided to launch this ambitious project as his solo recording debut: fusion / funk settings of William Blake’s Songs Of Innocence. Not exactly the most unique idea in the world; i can think of 3 or 4 other such endeavors at making music out of Blake. But this succeeds quite well, I think.
The music is funky and psych-flavored, expansive in places and understated in others. There are over 40 musicians who have credits in the liner notes, and he finds room for as many at a time as he can.
Tracks I liked
Holy Thursday - the chillest of these tracks
The Smile - cosmically aligned.
The Mental Traveler - cool and soundtrack-y
