Dogman - King's X (1994)
I heard about King’s X with their 1989 album Gretchen Goes To Nebraska. They were well positioned to keep my attention as I went away from the metal-ish and towards the alt-rock-ish, since they were a bit of both. By 1994, it was sound-like-a-Seattle-band-or-don’t-get-noticed in the more rockin’ cars of the alt-rock freight train, and King’s X responded by going into the studio with Pearl Jam / Stone Temple Pilots / Rage Against The Machine producer Brendan O’Brien.
They made a solidly recorded set of typically great songs, buried under the sludgy excess of the particular moment in rock music.
The production keeps everything clear enough for the band’s vocal harmonies and gaudy harmonics to shine through, which makes this much more interesting than it might have been in lesser hands.
