Undertow - Tool (1993)
Imagine with me: Let’s say some chthonic eldritch monster emerged from the Id to conquer humanity and immanetize the collective unconscious nightmare of encroaching insanity we all work so hard to escape from. And let’s say that this dread creature really dug playing music with all of its various tentacles and appendages, and could do the work of four musicians.
The music it would play would sound like Tool. I will not be taking follow up questions.
Danny Carey (o_O) is a fantasticly expressive drummer, able to add just the right touch of color to whatever the rest of the band decides on.
Maynard James Keenan (who, i suspect, uses the middle name hoping people will mistake him for a serial killer) has great range and, like the rest of the band, goes from seething to exploding in a quarter-note.
I don’t know if this is their best record, but it’s damn close.
