Constant Shallowness Leads To Evil - Coil (2000)

I’m out of my “listen to it just because it weirds people out” era, partly because I never talk to anyone anymore. But Coil (O_o) fit that bill pretty well.

I felt at the time like there were a couple different camps of edgy music. The first I’d characterize as making music to scare the rubes, take things that normal folks might put on out of curiosity and then add so much to it that’s alienating (looking at you, Trent). Then there are the folks, like Coil, for whom that first path just wasn’t enough. This second approach had to be so incomprehensible to normies that commercial success was impossible, and that otherness was worn as a badge of pride.

Coil was weird. That was the point. Not as in “weird, but like i really dig singing along.” More as in “I’m not sure if this is music or not. What the hell?”
