Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - The Beatles (1967)

Even among people who are devoted to the Beatles, not everyone loves Sgt Pepper.

It is maybe more self-conscious about being outre than Revolver, although they weren’t nearly done trying to stick it to the squares.

The songs include some of the band’s best, but are so dense both musically and lyrically that it can be a little much for some.

I won’t argue with you if you don’t like this album or even if you don’t like the Beatles. But to me this is one of those perfect moments every time I have it on. Adventurous, beautiful, and never boring.

As with several of my top tier favorites, “Tracks I Liked” would be a ridiculous excercise. Lyrically I think my favorite is the bizarre anachronism of Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite. The reprise of the title song is the rockingest, especially if you seek out the non-overdubbed studio originals on the Super Deluxe edition or on the Anthology comps. Getting Better and Fixing A Hole are Beatles bangers from the long-lost days of about 18 months before this. A Day In The Life is a bookmark for the kind of cosmically ambitious things they’d do in another 18 months.
