Rain Forest - Walter Wanderley (1966)
Trying to throw a little variety into my jazz-and-rock-all-the-time jag I’ve been on lately. Ended up with this record of prominent Bossa tunes from organist Wanderley. It includes Summer Samba, which is the bossa nova you’re second-most-likely to recognize, and The Girl From Ipanema, which I imagine is the Brazilian equivalent of being able to play Wonderwall.
Cheesy, corny, or whatever foodstuff you’d like to use to describe it is probably about right. But it was a legit release on a legit jazz label, with legit musicians. We’ll have to forgive it for being a bit of a time capsule now.
And honestly, he really does get cooking in a few places, like Taste of Sadness.
