Inventions - Renaud Capucon & Gautier Capucon (2006)

I used to deliver pizzas as a part time gig. I used to work until close so after midnight I usually switched out of the rock, electronic, and audiobook space and listened to the late night guy on Classical Minnesota Public Radio. I heard a lot of things I enjoyed, but few left the impression on me that a track from this record did.

Bach, to me, is what perfection sounds like. His chamber pieces, especially, are just mathematical in their beauty and precision. Both of the Capucon brothers are touring soloists, so the music is in good hands.

The first half of the record is the titular Bach two-part inventions, originally written for keyboard to teach the system of counterpoint harmony. They also include a Bach piece from the Well-Tempered Clavier collection as well as duo pieces by Bela Bartok and others. They end with a Fritz Kreisler trio featuring the Capucons’ sister, Aude, on piano.

You don’t need much knowledge or experience with classical music to enjoy this record. The music speaks for itself.
