Watershed - Opeth (2008)

I don’t know that there’s a bright, shining line between “early Opeth” and “modern Opeth.” But if you had to find a candidate, how could you pass an album literally titled “Watershed”?

This is another step in the progression of the band towards their modern heavy prog sound that’s basically left further genre distinctions sitting on the side of a lonely Swedish highway.

The grooves come and go, but when they do come they’re massive and bone-crushing. The acoustic intersticials are gorgeous and delicate. The melodies bridge the gap between these two extremes.
