Their newer albums seem to be more of a full band situation, but to judge from the credits this one is primarily multi-instrumentalist Nicholas Dell’Orto and some contributors.
Droning and squalling strings and synths drop in often. The drums are lively, moving from bombed-out jazz to blackgaze and back into calmer territory. We get whipped around from calm acoustic guitar to mournful string backing under the same figures and forward into angry, thrashing waves of noise.
There are probably dozens of bands that play this kind of post rock: laid back and brooding to start, building to shimmering soundscapes, whipping into a frenzy occasionally. What these guys lack in originality they make up for by being very good at it.
