Avantdale Bowling Club - Avantdale Bowling Club (2018)
This is a real gem that I’d read about but hadn’t listened to until today. The music is pretty straightforward post-bop and spiritual jazz, heavily influenced by John Coltrane.
The whole thing is highly autobiographical (or appears to be). The laid-back, slice-of-life flow matches the slow and deliberate instrumentals.
Musically, it gets more modern-hip-hop-sounding and less spiritual-jazz-sounding as it goes along, but the initial tracks set a great mood for the rest of it.
My favorite hip hop is almost always off the beaten path, and this is an excellent addition to my personal head canon.
