I talk a lot about Billy Woods and his label, Backwoodz. They consistently put out a lot of the most interesting hip hop out there right now.
This is no less true for the Backwoodz full length debut (I think) for psych-underground-horrorcore-weirdo rapper Fatboi Sharif. The album is produced by Child Actor and the collab is a great combo of dark atmosphere and sometimes dark, sometimes absurd lyrics.
The music often goes long stretches without any real drum track, making it an unusual sound. The beat comes from various environmental sounds and samples, guitars, and other things that still get the beat across but in a sketched-in sort of way. It adds to the overall oppressiveness of it.
A typically strong outing for a typically strong label.
