Our Days Are Multiplied - Spectaclist (2020)
This project is sometimes as much personal journal as it is music blog, as you know. Today is a weird day and I thought I’d talk about it.
I’m in the midst of having cataract surgery. I mean, I’m not on a table with a scalpel in my eye right now but i got one eye done this morning and I go back to have the other done tomorrow morning.
So today I have a once-in-a-lifetime window to directly witness the difference between how the world is supposed to look and how my view of it has been gradually distorted over the past decade or more.
The difference is startling. I’ve long had a problem perceiving color differences, and I’m realizing that my “old” eye is significantly shifted toward yellow while my “new” one shows me white as actually being white. The fact that it is that way was expected, but it’s the dramatic degree of difference that I hadn’t expected.
Google tell s me that the effects of cataracts can start to creep in for 10 to 20 years before they really need to be treated, and I now wonder if this isn’t a lart part of why I’ve just not been able to talk intelligently about color the way other people do.
I wish there was a procedure as basic aas this to get me back the acuity of my hearing that I’ve lost over the years. Sadly, though, the only thing I can do about that is wear Loops to concerts and even to movies to preservie what hearing I have left that my love of loud music over the eyars hasnt’ taken from me.
Oh yea: hte listen of the day was this spacey post rock record. It soundtracked me obsessing over my eyes but I can’t say that it I gave it a close listen.
It is pretty interesting. Close-up drums fill in around the other instruments to give it a very small-room kind of feel that isn’t what you typically expect from post orck (or at least I don’t).
