Woodstock - Portugal. The Man (2017)

Portugal. The Man (a name that wreaks havoc on spelling and grammar checkers) is a band I’ve listened to off and on over the past decade and a half or so without them sticking much in my mind. Feel It Still, their worldwide hit / Apple commercial / cultural moment, certainly helped, although I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that, until not very long ago, I’d thought they were also were responsible for another big cultural touchstone that they apparently weren’t.

This album is an example of a big hit not being remotely representative of a whole record. This a very fun, clever, and danceable album all the way through, and they take full advantage of a wide array of pop-centric producers to push the sound towards the mainstream without ever quite landing there.

There are some great turns of phrase, some great hooks, and a bunch of dance-friendly rock grooves to keep you interested all the way through.

A fun listen.
