Fishcotheque - The Jazz Butcher (1988)
They didn’t call this “Brit-pop” until the 90s really, but this is very much in that vein. Jagged, catchy, smart, funny pop with just a touch of postpunk energy, sort of a missing link between The Jam and early 90s Pulp.
I was briefly a college DJ, and when you work the 2am to 5am shift, nobody cares what you play. So I tended to play random songs off random records I’d grab off the shelf. I came across Looking For Lot 49 and loved it. It didn’t really make a superfan, but it stuck with me. And this album is solid all the way through, so I’m glad I came across it.
Tracks I Liked
Out Of Touch - danceable and fun
Living In A Village - blue-eyed Afrobeat?
Looking For Lot 49 - a great little tune
