Dreams - Elephant Gym (2022)
I quite liked their 2018 album when it came out, and it’s still in heavy rotation for me. I suppose they are post-rock, because they borrow bits and pieces from rock, dance, jazz, and lots of other things. They don’t seem to self-identify that way. Their quote in an NME article is: “We like rock, we like jazz, we like classical music, we like traditional music, […] This is the album where we finally fulfill our dream to ‘collect’ every sound we like.”
Good for them, they do a pretty great job of that. Excellent playing, and a boundless imagination for song structures and sonic detail. I had them pegged for my “concentration music” silo on the last album, but this is a little more front-and-center, demanding attention. It’s attention I’m happy to give.
Tracks I Liked
Go Through The Night - gaudy and gorgeous, but still understated
Witches - a lilting pop tune, but the bass groove and guitar breaks drive it into more complex territory
Dieties’ Party - a whimsical take that gets into some intense territory
