It's Just Begun - The Jimmy Castor Bunch (1972)

ideated from: the oddest stuff I could find from a random album list generator

I always love it when I listen to something on a lark and I find it genuinely awesome. I’d never heard of these guys, though they are apparently a thing people know about. A comedy-minded funk record (as opposed to all the really serious 70s funk, I guess). There multiple samples, references, and jokes I’d heard elsewhere but not known where they come from. Well, here they are.

This is a solid slab fun 70s funk. I’m super glad I picked it.

Tracks I Liked

It’s Just Begun - pretty sure it’s been sampled a million times. Still great.

Troglodyte (Cave Man) - a big hit for them. Playing sexism for laughs seems less funny than it maybe did in the 70s, but the whole thing is so joyfully weird that it’s hard to complain.

L.T.D (Life, Truth, & Death) - Always respect a band who employ a full-time conga player. Thank you for your service to the groove, Lenny Fridle, Jr. He gets to shine on this one in particular.
